Ep 314: The Consistency Fantasy!

The Consistency Fantasy: Why You Don’t Need to Be Consistent Today

What if trying to be “consistent” is actually getting in your way?

In Episode 314 of Veg Your Best, The Consistency Fantasy, we’re talking about one of the sneakiest traps that can show up when we decide we’re ready to make a change: the fantasy of from now on.

Maybe September has you feeling motivated. You’re ready to eat more plant-based, go vegan, get back to vegan, try new recipes, or finally make a change you’ve been thinking about for a while.

And then, almost immediately, your brain jumps ahead.

What about next month?
What about the holidays?
What about travel?
What if I can’t keep doing this forever?

Before you know it, you’re spending your energy trying to solve the future instead of doing anything today.

Consistency Happens Later

Here’s the thing: consistency isn’t an action you can accomplish today.

Today, you can only do the thing.

You can make the meal. Try the plant-based milk. Order the vegan option. Experiment with a new ingredient. Ask a restaurant about its plant-based choices. You can try something and learn from it.

If you do it again tomorrow, great.

If you don’t do it again for a week, that’s information too.

Eventually, you may look back and realize you’ve done something repeatedly enough that it looks a whole lot like consistency. But you didn’t have to create “consistency” on day one.

You just had to start.

Three Better Questions to Ask

Instead of asking, “How am I going to stay consistent?”, try these questions:

  • What can I actually do today?
  • What would be worthwhile even if I only did it once?
  • What’s already working that I don’t want to mess with?

These questions keep you focused on action rather than on trying to guarantee the behavior of your future self.

And that matters, especially when you’re making changes around food.

You don’t need to know what you’ll eat six months from now. You don’t need to have your entire plant-based life figured out. You can try one recipe, learn that you love it—or that nobody in your house will eat it—and use that information to decide what comes next.

Even the things that don’t work can move you forward.

Skip the Fantasy. Practice the Life.

When we focus too much on our imagined future selves, we can spend a surprising amount of time planning instead of practicing.

Your future consistent self can’t make today’s breakfast for you. She can’t make dinner tonight. She can’t try the new recipe or order the plant-based option.

You can.

So if you’re feeling that September energy—or New Year’s energy, vacation energy, Monday energy, or just a random Wednesday when you suddenly decide you’re ready—use it.

Pick one thing.

Try one thing.

Learn one thing.

You don’t need to guarantee that you’ll do it forever.

You just need to do something real today.

And who knows? Maybe someday you’ll look back and discover that you became consistent along the way.
